National Donut Day was started in 1938 by The Salvation Army to honor the Salvation Army “Lassies” who served the soldiers in World War 1. Woman volunteer of the Salvation Army who was known as ‘Doughnut Girls’, used to serve doughnuts to the army in WW1. In Chicago city, the day began as a fundraiser. The main motive of the fundraiser was to help the people who are in need during the time of the Great Depression.
For this purpose, 250 armies were sent to France on a fact finding mission. The mission was to provide baked goods to the needy as well as provide cloth mending service, writhing supplies, and stamps. For this ‘Huts’ were formed and in each hut, there was 6 staff including four women. These women put their hard work to serve the army as Margaret Sheldon wrote of one busy day: “Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee.”
