How to Spot Common Plumbing Issues

Cynthia RussellBy Cynthia RussellApril 18, 2024

If you notice a decrease in water pressure, it could be an indicator of a leak. It’s important to get this fixed right away so it doesn’t worsen over time.

Clogged drains and toilets are a huge inconvenience. They can cause overflows and smell terrible. Prevent clogs by avoiding tossing any solid waste down the drains and using liquid soap instead of bar soap.

Leaky Pipes

Leaky pipes are one of the most common plumbing issues that homeowners face. These leaks can waste water, damage your home’s structure, and create a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.

Leaks often occur when the seals on a pipe wear out or break. This can be caused by age, extreme shifts in temperature, or poor installation. If you suspect a leak, shut off your water supply using the valve located near the meter or in your garage. Then call a plumber right away to avoid further problems.

Another telltale sign of a leaking pipe is an increase in your water bill. Whether this hike is temporary or permanent, it’s definitely a sign that something needs to be fixed ASAP. To stop a leak, you need to find the source of the leak. This can be difficult since many of your home’s pipes are hidden in walls or crawl spaces. You can also try to repair the leak yourself, but it’s important to remember that any do-it-yourself projects should be done with proper safety precautions in place. Most people carry on projects only to cost them more money and problems.

Clogged Drains

Plumbing pipes can be susceptible to a variety of problems, including blockages. When water encounters a full or partial obstruction, it will often redirect itself and cause reactions that can result in anything from slow drainage to flooding and even rotting of floor beams and wall framing.

If you notice a smelly drain, gurgling sounds, or standing water, these are all signs of a clogged pipe. Drain clogs occur when food, hair, gunk, or other debris builds up and becomes trapped in pipes. Over time, this waste can cause bacterial growth which leads to foul odors.

A variety of things can contribute to drain clogs, including putting oil or cooking grease down your drains. These substances solidify when they cool and obstruct pipes. Using baking soda regularly can help break down oils and fats and prevent these types of clogs. In addition, it’s important to dispose of food scraps in a sanitary manner and not leave them sitting in your sink or tub.

Foul Smells

If foul odors are wafting through your home on a regular basis, it can be a sign of plumbing issues. Foul smells are often caused by a build-up of bacteria that is

decomposed by the waste you send down your drains. You can reduce the amount of odor-causing bacteria by not washing hair down the drain, and by regularly using a mixture of baking soda and vinegar or a commercial drain cleaner.

A clogged vent can also cause foul odors. The curved section of pipe under your sink, called the P-trap, is designed to hold water and prevent sewer gasses from entering your home. If this trap dries out, it will emit foul odors.

A clogged vent can also be caused by an accumulation of lint in the vent line. You can try running water through the drain for a few minutes to refill the P-trap and then clean the drain thoroughly. If this doesn’t work, you may need to call a professional plumber. It is important to find a good plumber. Backups

If multiple drains are backing up at once, it’s time to call a plumbing professional. This may be a sign of a major clog or breakage in the sewer line, which will require immediate attention to prevent further damage to your home and health.

A clog or break in the sewer line will stop waste and wastewater from exiting your home, forcing it back up through your drains instead. This can occur when tree roots penetrate the lines or if you’re disposing of cooking grease in the wrong place.

The most obvious sign of a problem with your sewer line is the smell of sewage. This can indicate a blockage, and it’s best to shut off your water until you can get the issue fixed. It’s also important to keep your family away from the area until a professional can arrive. If the smell of sewage is lingering in your home, you should wear gloves and a face mask when handling it.
