Happy Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is a special day that we used to celebrate worldwide to honour the sacrifice of Saint Valentine. We show love to our very personal one on this special day from the gratefulness to Saint Valentine.
But who is this Saint Valentine? We get different stories about him from different sources but most authorized historians’ opinions lead us to the love story of Saint Valentine and the daughter of his prison jailer.
Some experts state that it’s organised by Saint Valentine, a Roman legend who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity on order from the Emperor. Saint sacrificed his life and was beheaded by the rulers. You will find the Details History, Significance, When, Why and More
Before the beheading was done, while imprisoned, Valentine’s used to care for his fellow prisoners and also his jailor’s blind daughter. There is also a story running that Valentine cured the girl’s blindness and that his final act before being executed was to write her a love message signed ‘from your Valentine’.
Now we are used to celebrating the execution day of Valentine’s with our loved ones and calling them ‘My Valentine’.
There is another different story we find in history too. Saint Valentine, a priest who was believed to have secretly helped Christian couples get married. This was a secret movement against the Roman Emperor Claudius II because the emperor did not allow men to get married to enrich his army. That was of the view that single men were better and more dedicated soldiers. Saint Valentine did not agree with this ideology and facilitated the weddings of couples in love. When this secret movement of a saint came to light through Roman intelligence, he was beheaded by the Emperor. He was then executed on February 14 in the year 270 AD. After hundreds of years, this day has started to be celebrated to honour the sacrifice for love.
When is Valentine’s Day?
Valentine’s day has been celebrated worldwide every year on 14th February since the 15th century. The celebrations change their colour from a lot of evolution by this period but the main theme of Valentine’s day is related to love always from the beginning.

Back in the day, the Romans used to celebrate the feast of Lupercalia from February 13 to February 15, in which men sacrificed a dog and a goat. After this, the hides of the slain animals were used by men to whip women. Young women even lined up to be whipped by men due to their belief that this made them more fertile.
During the celebrations, a matchmaking lottery was also held and men picked out names of women from a box and proceeded to profess their love to these women during the festival. This sometimes also culminated in a marriage.
However, Lupercalia was replaced by St Valentine’s Day by the end of the 5th century by Pope Gelasius, and this was part of the reason that led to Valentine’s Day being associated with romance as well as the beginning of love.
The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards.
Modern Valentine’s Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. But virtual messages are being very popular with couples in the last few years.
