Demystifying Body Fat: A Comprehensive Guide To Accurate Calculation And Healthy Management

Body Fat & Its Types

The means by which the body stores energy for a longer duration is through fats. These fats get stored in the fat cells and are sub-categorised into two different columns, i.e., brown fat and white fat. While brown fat helps in maintaining the temperature, white fats act as a reserve. In terms of location of the fat storage in the body, they are categorized into visceral and subcutaneous fat. The latter is the fat beneath the skin while the former lies around the abdominal region. There’s a certain level of cat deemed as essential fat that our body requires. Anything drastically above or below that can become the case of obesity or underweight respectively.

Body Fat Calculator- Methods to Measure

The measurement of total body fat percentage of a human body is done through Body Fat Calculator. Body Fat Calculator is a much more effective and acute tool for measuring’s one fat percentage as it takes into consideration girth measurements and margin of related body parts.  There are various ways to measure body fat percentage and not all of them are feasible for general masses, for instance, bioelectrical impedance analysis and skin fold methods.

U.S. Navy Method

  1. Measure the circumference of your waist, preferably with someone’s help. For men, measure horizontally around the naval and for women, the smallest width of the waist.
  2. Measure the circumference of your neck and avoid stretching it.
  3. For females, take measurements at the largest width of the hips.

Insert the measurement in the following formula and have your results.

USC Units for men

BFP = 86.010×log10(abdomen-neck) – 70.041×log10(height) + 36.76

USC Units for Women

BFP = 163.205×log10(waist+hip-neck) – 97.684×(log10(height)) – 78.387

SI Metric Units for Men

BFP =4951.0324 – 0.19077×log10(waist-neck) ) + 0.15456×log10(height)- 450

SI Metric Units for Women

BFP =4951.29579 – 0.35004×log10(waist+hip-neck) + 0.22100×log10(height)- 450

BMI Method

Another method to calculate body fat percentage is through the BMI Method. Abbreviated as Body Mass Index, BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms with the square of your height which is taken out in meters. Once BMI is calculated, you can insert the measurements in the below mentioned formula and know your body fat percentage.

BFP Formula for Adult Men

BFP = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × Age – 16.2

BFP Formula for Adult Women

BFP = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × Age – 5.4

BFP Formula for Boys (Below 18)

BFP = 1.51 × BMI – 0.70 × Age – 2.2

BFP Formula for Girls (Below 18)

BFP = 1.51 × BMI – 0.70 × Age + 1.4
