In the month of Muharram 61 AH (approx. 20 October 680 AD), an event took place in Iraq at a place known as Kerbala on the bank of the river Euphrates. On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) along with his family members and 72 followers embraced martyrdom in the hands of the Yazid soldiers at the desert of Karbala to uphold the teachings of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh).
When is Ashura 2022?
Muḥarram was one of the four sacred months when fighting was not allowed. The word Muḥarram itself derives from the Arabic root ḥ-r-m, one of whose meanings is “forbidden” (ḥarām). Ashura falls on the tenth day of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic year) in the Muslim calendar.
This year’s celebrations begin on 7th August and end on the evening , August 8. The Hijri calendar – is ten to 12 days shorter that the Gregorian. “The year is of twelve months, out of which four months are sacred: Three are in succession Dhul-Qa’ da, Dhul-Hijja and Muharram, and (the fourth is) Rajab…” (Bukhari 3197)

is Fasting Required in Ashura?
Fasting is Not Compulsory During The Day of Ashura. But Some (Particularly Sunni) Muslims Choose To Fast. This is Because on This Day The Prophet Muhammad Was Said To have fasted on the Day of Ashura.
During Ashura, some Shia Muslims engage in self-flagellation in remembrance of the death of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Husayn ibn Ali.
Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said:
“I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of ‘Ashura’, and this month, meaning Ramadhan.” Reported by Al-Bukhari, 1867
Ashura Customs & Traditions
Sunnis and Shias observe this day in very different ways. For Sunnis, it is a day to celebrate the victory God gave Moses. As such, it is often celebrated by Sunnis with a day of fasting. Shias observe it with morning rituals and a re-enactment of the martyrdom of Hussein.
How to Observe Ashura
- Mourn
On this day, Shi’a Muslims wear mourning attire, while some make pilgrimages to the shrine in Karbala, Iraq. Observances include offering respect and mourning the passing of Husayn. Parties, music, and weddings are banned during this sad time.
- Fast
For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is a time for fasting to show gratitude for the victory God gave to Moses. It commemorates the day when Allah created a path in the Red Sea and saved Moses and his followers.
- Be tolerant
In Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Hosay (Ashura) takes on a unique character that demonstrates religious tolerance and mutual respect. Attended by Muslims and people of other faiths, the celebration has absorbed influences from many other religions like Roman Catholicism, Hinduism, and traditional Baptist practices.
