15 Clear Reasons Your Car Won’t Start and How to Fix Them in USA

Cynthia RussellBy Cynthia RussellDecember 2, 2023

One of the worst things that can happen in the morning is when your car fails to start.

There are various reasons why your car doesn’t start in the morning or breaks down in the middle of the road.

If you wish to stay safe from such problems, don’t worry because here we will discuss some common reasons why your car doesn’t start and how to fix these issues.

1) Your Battery is Dead

Car manufacturers recommend changing your battery once every five years. Due to regular use, the battery loses its efficiency in storing charge, so it’s unable to supply electric current.

To avoid the problem of being stranded on the road due to a dead battery, you should always carry jumper cables with you and keep the battery terminals clean so there is no corrosion.

2)  Fuel Problems

It’s obvious that your car won’t start when there is no fuel. But there are some other problems with the fuel system that can stop your engine from starting.

If your fuel pump has malfunctioned, then it will pump fuel from the container to bring it toward the engine, where it is burned with air. When fuel can’t reach the engine, it won’t run.

You should visit any reputed auto repair shop in Houston to get your fuel system inspected and get mandatory repairs.

3)  Starter Motor Not Functional

The starter motor is an electrical motor connected to your car’s battery. The function of the starter motor is to set the engine in motion when you turn the ignition.

If your battery is fully charged, but you still hear a clicking sound when trying to start the engine, then you have a faulty starter motor.

4) Ignition Lock Jammed

If your ignition key can’t be turned because the steering wheel may be jammed, then your engine won’t start.

To free the wheel, try turning it side to side while carefully turning the key back and forth at the same time. If this is not successful, then you need to get the steering lock repaired.

5)  Problem with Immobiliser

The car’s security system usually stops the engine from starting. If the immobilizer doesn’t recognize your key, then your engine won’t start.

A sign of a problem with the immobilizer is that your central locking system won’t be functional.

You can try to start the car with a spare key. But, if the immobilizer doesn’t recognize that either, then it needs to be reprogrammed.

6)  Flooded Engine

A flooded engine means that your engine has a lot of fuel, but the supply of air is limited. This is a common problem with cold engines.

If you think that the engine is flooded, due to which it’s not starting, then you should press the accelerator pedal while starting the engine. The problem of a flooded engine usually occurs when the engine is cold. Pressing the accelerator for some seconds can make the engine hot so it can function optimally.

7) Blocked Fuel Filter

A fuel filter is used in cars to keep the contaminants away from the engine. After some time, the fuel filter can be clogged as it has gathered enough contaminants.

If the filter is blocked, then fuel won’t reach the engine, so your car will not run. So, it’s better to get your fuel filter replaced after every 15,000 miles.

8) Wiring Problems

Your car has a complex series of wirings that maintain the current supply wherever it is needed. Most commonly, the fuses are blown due to high voltage current passing through it.

If some of the main fuses in your car are blown out, or there is a short circuit due to two or more wires joining with each other, then your car can fail to start.

9)  Alternator Problems

The role of the alternator is to convert mechanical energy from the engine into electrical energy, which is used for charging the battery.

The alternator charges the battery while you are driving. If your alternator is not working, then it won’t charge the battery while you are driving, and soon the battery will be dead.

10) Engine Problems

There could be a large range of engine problems. However, the main culprits behind the engine problems are issues with the crankshaft and timing belt.

11)  Engine Intake Issues

The problems with the engine intake include issues with fuel injectors, pressure regulators, throttles, and even sensors.

12) Spark Plugs Problem

The role of spark plugs is to create the spark needed to ignite the mixture of fuel and air. If the spark plugs are not working properly, there will be no spark, so that the mixture won’t be ignited.

13)  Bad Connection With Battery

Your car won’t start if the cable connection on the car batteries is loose or corroded. The flow of electricity will be blocked so the starter motors won’t rotate.

14) Your Car Isn’t Neutral

Sometimes, the car doesn’t stop because the vehicle is not in parking gear or neutral. If you are driving a manual, the car may start in gear, but the engine will shut down after a jerk.

15) Ground Cable Wiring Problem

The ground cable is the heavy battery cable that connects the negative side of the battery terminals to the car’s body. If the ground cable is broken, then the engine won’t start.
